Training

Thus, For The training for this mind of compassion is not faith based, though compassion is a core value in all the major religions. But, we don’t reinvent the wheel. Buddhism has provided extensive methodology on training for the stable, balnced, mind of compassion, which have been honed for application in the West. The step – wise training includes shamatha (mental calm and steadiness), balance (equanimity meditations), insight meditations that help us recognize automatic patterns , and conceptual contemplation of compassion for the difficulties and efforts of ourselves and our others, as well as appreciation. The benefits of actually training in compassion is now catching the interest of western sciences and academics.

Open Ended ongoing training groups:

.our volunteer library group undertaken during our development of our workining...(something) -- developed and evolvedour ways of working organically during the year and a half of this group. Ttsining priorities we evolved by experience:

* Meeting the needs of participants., meeting participants wshere they already are iin terms of knowledge of meditation. (etc).

* Adapting the level of interpersonal discussion/sharing to the particular group's tendencies and wishes.

*Adfapting the amoount of group time alloted to discussion vs. meditation practice, vs. teaching

* adapting the level of conceptual detail and depth of the teaching aspect to the needs and interests and knoiwledge of the group.

* working with8 a group in such a wy as to accomodate part6icipants of varying needs and levels of information..l..after all the above adaptations, it is still the case that individuals have varying ways of approaching this kind of material and participating in a training group

Having drawni on the our experience of leading an open ended, heterogeneous  group, we developed a range and flexibility, an iapproach to heterogeneity within groups.

*SPECIFIC more HOMOOGENEOUS Groups:

*Dermatology groou9p - patienits with afflictive itch symptoms unresponsive to medical treatment and highly stressful,

* Parents of autistic children, Marcus Center: STressed moms and dads needing strengthened tolerance, patience, mindfulness, self compassion, Such a group benefitted greatly from sharing their stresses and sup0pporting one another, encouraging at home practice of the meditation etc.

*Individuals with chronic pain, using specific methnods developed in Mindfulness Based
Stress Reduction for pain management.

*Focus and ATtention training groups:  Training in shamatha -- ie.., tight single point fucus and also open mind calming and attentional stability.  This is the foundational of each and every meditatiiono training. However, this can be emphasized and more intensively practiced  in a given group, depending on needs and purposes of the participants.

*Relationship management :  Meditatiion practice for emotional balance under stressful relational situations, and for self observation - enhanced awareness of habituyal reaction patterns enables practitioners to mkore easily exit from reactivity. Training in types of automatic thiinking, and schemas (as per Cognitive psychology), gives an conceptual framework.

*Analytical meditation re: life situations - training building the method first with less emotionally charged material and then applying it to personal delimmas or questions.

*Compassion meditation, focusing on relationships. Compassion  "for the one who is makiong you boil."  This is a marvelous benefit to the trainee, and stress reducing, in ifact.

SIZE and TIME FRAME of groups:

*Brain related trainings: Neuroplasticity:  The braini releases new stemcells up into 80's...We can train and strengthen our actual neural pathways. This includes education regarding the braini, the scientific research, brain management (so to speak!), with slides and formal or seminar style talk included to thie degree of interest of the goup. Then, application of this brain awareness as meditation practice...etc. Mind your Brain! It can get on autopilot...but does noit have to.
